IT’S OFFICIAL
Big day today! Going by the official distance from Land’s End to John O’Groats of 874 miles, we’ve definitely hit (and exceeded) the half-way mark!! This is based on Google Maps cycle route from Land’s End to Kendal as 496.7 miles. YES!
What’s a few miles between friends?
But… thanks to my dad’s ‘innovative’ use of technology (who could forget the scenic detour to Solihull?), we must have clocked up more than 600 miles already. Not that it brought us 100 miles closer to our target…
As my grandma used to say
‘If it was easy it wouldn't be worth it!’. That’s one of my mum’s (annoying) catchphrases. Apparently, her grandma used to say it to her because mum always says ‘as my grandma used to say, if it was easy…’. (Mum’s other catchphrases include ‘I’ll just finish this email and I’m done for the day’ and ‘Be quiet, I’m on a conference call’.)
It’s been tough but reaching this milestone makes all the physical and mental exhaustion we’ve experienced worthwhile. Seriously. Even the slippery, hilly, muddy routes in Cornwall seem OK now, as do the recent falls I had because I misjudged the steepness of a canal path. Who knows, I might even be able to view getting close to an autistic meltdown while trying to get out of Solihull as a means to an end by the time I get to John O’Groats ... (but not quite yet).
A Kiwi in a Rugby Club
Tonight we are sleeping in our tent (well, under a fly-sheet, which is basically a tent without the side walls). We’re staying at a campsite which happens to be in the Kendal Rugby Club! Needless to say that dad, who’s a Kiwi (ie a New Zealander) and a BIG fan of All Blacks, could not be happier. I did rugby for a year when I was about ten but as my coordination and processing are not great, I had to drop out. But I still enjoy watching rugby with dad (it’s like a religion to him).
