A much easier day today, cycling mostly along the A34 from Stafford to Wilmslow.
Short breaks here and there, loving the relatively uncomplicated journey today.
We are staying overnight in Wilmslow. When we arrived at the pub for dinner, Dad gave one of the flyers to the waitress and she put it up on their message board. I didn’t know about it as I was busy looking at the menu.
She pinned up to the board and then, as a joke, came up to me and said ‘OMG, it’s Jonathan Slater??!’ as if I was famous. And than another person joined in ‘oh, I’ve heard all about you, Jonathan’, and another came up and asked if I was really ‘that Scout doing the LEJOG’. I was really surprised, I was like ‘really??!!’. And then Dad told me why they knew me and it all made sense!!🤣🤣🤣
We had a lovely dinner at The Couch & Four, chatting with several people, all eager to find out about our journey, wishing us luck and also donating to the fundraiser. It was a great atmosphere. And so was the food!
Maida Vale to Wilmslow
I looked up something interesting about Wilmslow… Looks like the most notable person to live here was Alan Turing who was involved in the development of early computers and their use in codebreaking during World War II and is considered to be the father of artificial intelligence. He was born in Maida Vale, London but lived for some time in Wilmslow. He appears on the current £50 note but I don’t think many people would notice as we use cards and Apple Pay nowadays. His private life was quite depressing as he was gay at the time when it was illegal to be gay in the UK. On the upside, a 2019 BBC series, as voted by the audience, named him the greatest person of the 20th century. So he’s finally famous - just like me (joke!).
Thank you for all your likes and comments on yesterday’s post, they really helped me yesterday. And keep spreading the message, we’re getting closer and closer to our target(s) - fundraising and John O’Groats 😉
I really look forward to reading your vlogs. It sounds like you are having great fun during your rest time, plus meeting some lovely, friendly people. Well done!
